Five Common Mental Health Disorders

1. Depression:

Causes: Depression can be caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and social factors. Traumatic experiences, stressful life events, and chronic medical conditions may also contribute to depression.

Signs and Symptoms: People with depression may feel sad or hopeless, lose interest in things they used to enjoy, have trouble sleeping, feel fatigued or lack energy, have changes in appetite or weight, have difficulty concentrating, feel worthless or guilty, and have thoughts of death or suicide.

Treatment: Depression is typically treated with a combination of medication and psychotherapy. Antidepressant medication can help balance the levels of chemicals in the brain that are associated with depression. Psychotherapy can help people with depression learn new coping strategies and develop a more positive outlook on life.

3. Bipolar Disorder:

Causes: Bipolar disorder may be caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and social factors. Brain chemistry and function may also contribute to bipolar disorder.

Treatment: Bipolar disorder is typically treated with medication, such as mood stabilizers or antipsychotics. Psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or interpersonal therapy, can also be helpful in managing symptoms and improving quality of life.

4. Schizophrenia:

Causes: The causes of schizophrenia are not fully understood, but genetics and brain chemistry are thought to play a role.

Signs and Symptoms: People with schizophrenia may experience delusions or hallucinations, disorganized speech or behavior, flat or blunted affect, lack of motivation or interest in activities, difficulty with daily functioning, social withdrawal or isolation, and cognitive impairment or memory problems.

Treatment: Schizophrenia is typically treated with antipsychotic medication. Psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or family therapy, can also be helpful in managing symptoms and improving quality of life.

5. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD):

Causes: The causes of ADHD are not fully understood, but genetics and brain chemistry are thought to play a role.

Signs and Symptoms: People with ADHD may have difficulty paying attention, be easily distracted, be forgetful, be hyperactive or impulsive, have trouble sitting still or staying focused, and have trouble completing tasks.

Treatment: ADHD is typically treated with medication, such as stimulants or non-stimulants, and psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy.  Marital counseling and family therapy may also assist individuals to cope with the stress that may be caused by a loved one living with ADHD.
